Rolex Swan Cup Sardinia

By September 15, 2014 Racing News

September 2014 saw another edition of the spectacular Swan Cup in Porto Cervo, Sardinia.  With almost 100 Swans ranging from 36 to 112 feet the views on the water were just as spectacular as off the water.  Northern Child had a very strong start finishing 5th in a tough 21 boat class in light airs.  In race 2 Northern Child had a great start and windward leg about 15 miles upwind around the various Islands of the Northern Coast of Sardinia and was in the first few boats until shortly after hoisting the spinnaker blew up in a large heading gust.  The crew worked incredibly hard to douse the kite and re hoist the smaller kite onboard but it did drop NC down the fleet a few places in the tight racing.  Race 3 was again a sterling start from Northern Child and an incredible beat in lighter breezes up through the Islands.  Stunning scenery complemented the great pace NC showed keeping up with faster boats in the class.  Once again sail damage was to be a crucial part of the race when the genoa wasn’t released in time and it tore on the top spreaders….  A lengthy sail change upwind despite best efforts left NC with a tough job to maintain a good result but despite this we still managed to finish 12th.  We ended the week 9th in a tough fleet after some sail damage which was a great result and a testament to the crews effort.
