Ichi Ban was design by Shaun Carkeek and built by Premier Composites in Dubai for Matt Allan for 2013 Sydney Hobart. The Carkeek 60 was primarily designed for long offshore races like the Rolex Sydney Hobart but without compromising her ability to race around the cans.
Allen says: “We’ve designed it to be a fast, powerful yacht with plenty of sail area, but also structurally sound, as I intend to campaign it in major ocean races most of the time and spend about a third of the time competing in regatta-style racing.”
The Carkeek 60 has a simple but powerful hull shape, a deep high aspect fixed fin keel and a tall ultra high modulus Southern Spars rig. This combination give the boat incredibility stability allowing a large amount of sail area to carried across a wide range of conditions. Considerable thought has been spent optimising the sail plan including mast position and rig dimensions to optimise the boat for IRC and average conditions found in the Rolex Sydney Hobart. Ichi Ban performs outstandingly in light air but equally comes into her own upwind in breeze.
All the sail handling systems onboard are hydraulically operated to allow continual sail trim whilst keeping weight in optimal positions and without excessively fatiguing crew on longer offshore races. This also makes the cockpit open and uncluttered helping crew movement during manoeuvres.
Ichi Ban came 4th overall and 2nd in class in 2018 Rolex Sydney Hobart Race under the name Winning Appliances. Chartering Ichi Ban would be a turn key charter options, the boat has all the sails and equipment you would want for the Sydney Hobart and has just gone through a full service to be race ready.
