Gotland Runt – ÅF Offshore Race
Date
The Gotland Runt is a renowned offshore race that has been captivating sailors since 1937. In 2024 the race returned to its nautical roots in Sandhamn and remains there for 2025. The race offers a challenging and scenic 350-nautical-mile course through the Swedish archipelago and the Baltic Sea.
The Course
The race begins at Gråskärsfjärden, south of Sandhamn, with a dramatic start that winds through the narrow passages of the Stockholm archipelago. Competitors then head north, navigating through the outer archipelago toward Svenska Högarna, before venturing into the open waters of the Baltic Sea.
The highlight of the course is the rounding of Gotland, Sweden’s largest island. This leg combines the tactical demands of coastal sailing with the endurance required for offshore racing. After circumnavigating the island, the fleet turns back toward Sandhamn, where the finish line awaits. The combination of natural beauty, unpredictable weather, and technical challenges makes this race a favourite among offshore sailors.
What to Expect
Gotland Runt offers a mix of sailing conditions, from the protected waters of the archipelago to the open sea, where wind and wave patterns can test even the most seasoned crews. The race requires strategic planning, precise navigation, and teamwork, making it a true test of skill and endurance.
