Norway’s breathtaking fjords, picturesque coastal villages, and dramatic mountain landscapes make it a dream destination for a yacht charter. One of the best ways to explore this stunning region is aboard the Swan 76, Tigris, a luxurious and seaworthy yacht perfectly suited for cruising these waters.
Using Bergen as a starting point offers numerous advantages: proximity to the airport, the attractions of Norway’s second-largest city, and, most importantly, easy access to the sheltered cruising grounds both to the south and the north. With skipper Maggie Adamson and mate Stewart Williamson, both from nearby Shetland, guests benefit from their in-depth local knowledge, ensuring a truly unforgettable experience.
Below, Maggie shares some of her favourite cruising spots along this spectacular coastline and presents two possible itineraries tailored to different sailing preferences.
Day 1 – Bergen to Tysnesøya
Departing from Hejellestad, a small marina just 15 minutes from Bergen Airport, we embark on a 22-mile passage to the tranquil anchorage off Tysnesøya. This is the perfect opportunity to settle into life onboard and take in the stunning Norwegian coastal scenery.
Day 2 – Lukksund Passage to Hardangerfjord
Sailing under the Lukksund Bridge, we navigate through a narrow, scenic passage between the mainland and Tysnesøya before entering the semi-sheltered Hardangerfjorden. After a 4-hour sail, we arrive at Jondal, a charming fjord-side village ideal for a peaceful evening.
Day 3 – Jondal to Norheimsund
After a relaxing morning exploring Jondal, we continue up the fjord to Norheimsund, home to the Hardanger Maritime Centre. Here, guests can learn about traditional Norwegian boatbuilding and ropemaking or visit the stunning Steinsdalsfossen waterfall.
Day 4 – Norheimsund to Rosendal
A short 4-hour sail takes us to the romantic village of Rosendal, famous for Scandinavia’s smallest castle and its beautiful gardens. With long summer daylight hours, there’s plenty of time for cultural exploration or a scenic hike.
Day 5 – Offshore Islands & Stord
Leaving the fjords behind, we set out to explore Norway’s outer islands before anchoring in the peaceful bay of Vistvikholmen on Stord Island. Here, guests can unwind with a glass of wine on deck or take a paddleboard to explore the coastline.
Day 6 – Return to Bergen via Strusshamn
A 30-mile passage takes us to Strusshamn, a picturesque harbor on Askøy Island, where we moor alongside the local yacht club. The final leg of the journey includes a leisurely sail under the AskøyaBrua bridge, leading us back to Bergen’s historic old town.
Day 1 – Bergen to Fedje
Setting sail from Bryggen, Bergen’s historic old town, we head north to Fedje, a small island rich in history. After a 4-hour sail, guests can enjoy scenic walks and local seafood at a restaurant featuring delicacies from the island’s gin and whisky distillery.
Day 2 – Fedje to Ortnevik
A 7-hour passage through a mix of open water and sheltered fjord sailing takes us to Ortnevik, a peaceful village surrounded by towering mountains. The tranquil anchorage provides the perfect spot to watch the sunset over the fjords.
Day 3 – Ortnevik to Gudvangen
Sailing deeper into the fjord, we reach Gudvangen, one of the most breathtaking spots in Norway. The steep cliffs and waterfalls make this a truly magical destination, with a museum, café, and local shop to explore ashore.
Day 4 – Gudvangen to Vik
We begin the return journey down the fjord, stopping at Vik, a small town nestled in a natural bay. Overlooked by steep mountains, this charming village offers a glimpse into traditional Norwegian life.
Day 5 – Vik to Rutledalen
Continuing south through Sognefjord, we anchor in a scenic group of small islands near Rutledalen, an idyllic spot for a peaceful evening.
Day 6 – Outer Isles & Rongeværet
Sailing towards the outer isles, we visit Rongeværet, where guests can explore the surrounding islands via RIB (rigid inflatable boat).
Day 7 – Return to Bergen
The final passage back to Bergen takes us through a different route, passing under the Nordhordland Bridge, one of the world’s largest floating bridges, before concluding the journey at Bryggen’s historic quayside.
