Swan 56-012 is a true head-turner, boasting a perfect blend of modern-classic lines and an elegant midnight blue hull. Originally built as a luxurious cruising yacht for a family, she also has the capability to compete successfully in regattas worldwide.
Interior & Layout
This yacht features the standard Swan 56 interior layout, offering both comfort and functionality. The owner’s cabin is located forward of the mast and includes the sought-after option of a separate shower cabin opposite the forward head. The layout is completed by two spacious aft cabins and a crew cabin in the forepeak, making her ideal for both private cruising and competitive sailing.
Performance & Keel Configuration
Swan 56-012 is equipped with the High-Performance Keel, originally designed for this model. Compared to the shallower keel, this configuration is 390 kg heavier, features a stronger keel frame, and provides a significantly lower center of gravity—45 cm deeper—resulting in enhanced stability and superior upwind performance.
Ownership & Racing Heritage
Formerly known as Desir Bleu, she spent her first year in Monaco before being acquired in 2000 by an Italian owner based in New York, who renamed her Nova. With assistance from Nautor Swan USA, he identified this specific hull as one of the lightest Swan 56 models built, making her a prime candidate for high-performance sailing. Initially intended as a two-year project while awaiting his new Swan 80, he retained Nova alongside his other yachts until 2014.
In 2001, Nova underwent a comprehensive racing upgrade, including a full Harken deck equipment overhaul, hull fairing for optimal hydrodynamics, and laser-measured keel and rudder refinements for exact symmetry.
Rigging & Mast
One of the standout features of this yacht is her Intermediate Modulus Carbon Fiber Mast, an exclusive high-performance upgrade found on only two Swan 56s. Stronger and stiffer than standard carbon fiber, this rig is approximately 150 kg lighter than the original aluminum mast. Notably, it retains the same dimensions as the original masthead aluminum rig, rather than the larger regatta-style fractional rig installed on some Swan 56s. This setup allows for effortless tacking and easy dinghy storage on deck without the need for a baby stay.
Recent Ownership & Upgrades
Between 2010 and 2014, Nova was stored on land at NEB in Newport. In August 2014, she was purchased by her current owner and renamed Amoress 3. This is the owner’s third Swan, and before departing for a winter in the Caribbean, he undertook a comprehensive refit, which included:
- New generator (12.5/9.4KW) for high load capacity and reduced running time.
- New JP3 rudder bearing with a composite bearing housing.
- Varnish work throughout the interior.
- Various other upgrades to enhance her sailing and comfort.
In May 2015, Amoress 3 completed her first and only transatlantic crossing under her own keel to Europe. Since then, she has been primarily used for family cruising, short-handed sailing, and even single-handed voyages.
Key Features & Must-Have Options
The current owner sought specific features when purchasing Amoress 3, ensuring she met the highest standards for performance and comfort:
- Carbon Mast – Eliminates the need for a baby stay, allowing easy tacking and convenient dinghy storage on deck.
- High-Performance Keel – Enhances stability and upwind performance, whereas the shallower keel configuration is considered too limiting.
- Large Generator (12.5/9.4KW) – Provides high power output with minimal runtime.
- Foldable Transom Door/Swim Platform – Not all Swan 56s have this feature. Essential for warm-water cruising, it can be replaced with a fixed carbon door for racing to reduce weight.
- Owner’s Cabin with Separate Shower – A rare and highly desirable feature found in only a few Swan 56s.
Conclusion
With her proven racing pedigree, high-performance upgrades, and luxurious cruising comfort, Amoress 3 is a truly exceptional Swan 56. Whether you’re looking for a capable offshore cruiser or a competitive race yacht, she offers the best of both worlds.
