Emily of Cowes is offering spaces for the Rolex Fastnet Race, with a commitment to crew comfort and safety. The skipper, Richard, will prioritise a positive experience and avoid subjecting the crew and boat to severe weather. Therefore, if a Force 8 gale or higher is forecast for any part of the racecourse, racing will be substituted with a relaxed cruise around the English Channel. If a gale is predicted as we exit the Channel, Emily of Cowes may take shelter in the Isles of Scilly. If, similar to recent Fastnet Races, a Force 8 is forecast at the start, we may delay our departure and cruise to the Channel Islands, aiming to meet the fleet later in the race.

Richard is one of the most experienced skippers you’ll have the pleasure of meeting, having sailed throughout his life around the Mediterranean and the Caribbean. Richard, who has crossed the Atlantic 20 times, owned several yachts before Emily of Cowes including the beautiful schooner, Coral of Cowes and the legendary ketch Emily Morgan.
Testimonial from RORC 600 charterer – “Richard was a champion throughout – calm, patient, great tutor, tactically great etc and we would all love to sail with him again”
The minimum experience requirements are 300 nautical miles of offshore racing or equivalent passage(s). The experience requirement shall be completed by a minimum of 30% of the crew (but no fewer than two) including the Person in Charge, and within 18 months of the start of the race. 30% of crew need to have completed the ISAF Offshore safety and sea survival course and we would strongly encourage all crew to complete the course
The race starts off the Royal Yacht Squadron start line of Cowes on the Isle of Wight on the south coast of England. Leaving The Solent through The Needles Channel, the race follows the southern coastline of England westward down the English Channel, before rounding Land’s End. After crossing the Celtic Sea, the race rounds the Fastnet Rock off the southwest coast of Ireland. Returning on a largely reciprocal course, the race rounds the Isles of Scilly before finishing at Cherbourg.
Crew are recommended to find accommodation ashore, in Cowes, the night before the Fastnet departure.
